Course Assignments

There are 36 assignments for this course.

The assignments for each section follow the short lecture to the section. The assignments comprise a mixture of short answers, multiple choice, true or false, reaction papers, and short essays. All assignments listed in each section relate directly to the readings from the text, films, and/or novels that you read for the section. The assignments and final are weighted as follows:

Assignments: 80% of your final grade & Final: 20% of your final grade

Expectations for Writing Assignments:

The assignments are designed to assess your understanding of the readings, your ability to respond critically to the readings, and your reaction to the readings. It is good to have opinions about what you read and view. However, when you complete the assignments, you must also demonstrate your knowledge, and support your ideas and opinions, with critical arguments that draw from the readings. I provide room for your personal reactions in many of the assignments, but I expect you to make logical arguments. For example, say you disagree with a pro-life reading on abortion that argues that the rights of the fetus should be protected since the fetus is a future person. It is acceptable to disagree, but, in doing so, your response should address the arguments made in the article. It is not acceptable to make a blanket statement that pro-life people are a bunch of fundamentalists, or that pro-choice people are baby killers.
